From Hide to Heritage for Schools
A bottega, five generations of history
Founded in the heart of Florence, in Palazzo Carnesecchi, Bojola has handed down the art of leatherworking for five generations. The workshop opens the doors of the bottega to students and turns this history into a learning experience: an opportunity to get up close with the materials, techniques and choices that give value to a handcrafted object.
How the workshop works
The program alternates between a theoretical part and a practical part. To ensure attention for every participant, a class of up to 18 students is divided into two groups of no more than 9: while one group carries out the hands-on activity, the other explores the theoretical topics; then the groups swap.
The activity lasts about 90 minutes and ends with the personalization of a leather item that each student takes home.

Theory: the value of craftsmanship
Students discover what sets the production of an artisan bottega apart from industrial manufacturing. Topics include vegetable tanning, choice of raw materials, production times, waste management, and the durability and care of objects. The workshop also offers a look at how a small business organizes its work to preserve quality and skills.
Practice: getting to know leather with your hands
Students observe and touch the leather to recognize its grain, characteristics and natural imperfections. Through a demonstration and a guided activity, they learn how patterns are laid out, how the material is used, and the care that the gesture of artisan cutting requires.
An object to take home
At the end of the workshop, each student completes a small leather item, such as a valet tray or a keyring, and personalizes it with their own initials using hot stamping. A tangible keepsake of the experience and of the skills discovered in the bottega.
